FIRST SUMMER NORTH POLE
This summer, we will try our best to make our dream come true. We, Cecilie Skog
and Rune Gjeldnes, are setting out on a real first unsupported North Pole Summer
Expedition. The dream is simple, challenging and beautiful.
Our quest begins early in June when we head out from Ward Hunt Island in Canada.
From here we face 1000 kilometres of constantly drifting ice on top of a near bottomless
ocean. The Arctic Ocean during summer is dramatically different from everything
we have known so far. We are used to harsh and cold winter expeditions with temperatures
reaching a freezing -50ºC degrees. What lies before us now, is a wonderful mix of
melting snow, open water and gigantic ice drifts. Skis, snowshoes, dry suits, swim
fins and canoes will aid us in reaching our goal this summer; the North Pole.
In end of July, after 55 days through slush and open water, with rain, snow and
summer’s sweet sunshine, we hope to reach 90 degrees north. Here, a icebreaker will
pick us up and bring us safely back home. We expect this expedition to be the most
challenging one yet, and we believe it will be the most exciting and adventure packed
trip of our lifetime. We just can’t wait to spend the summer on the polar ocean!
